FAMOUS
PAINTING STYLES

Painters throughout history have left a
great legacy of diverse styles, each belonging to its own
era. On this site we invite you to explore these styles
as represented by the most celebrated painters across the
ages. As a form of human expression, painting is related
to other arts like sculpture, poetry and music in that
each work is a unique interpretation of reality. When we
view a painting we get a glimpse of how the artist
perceives the world.
Philosophers and artists have generated
theories about art and painting since classical
times. Plato
omitted painting from his philosophical system,
maintaining that it cannot portray truth, while Leonardo
da Vinci described it as “a thing of the
mind”.
Centuries later, Hegel identified painting among the
“romantic” arts alongside poetry and music due to its
intellectual and symbolic objectives.
Painting styles are characterized by the
artists '
use of color and brushstrokes to express
themselves.
Among the numerous painting styles, these are the most
prominent: Abstract, Baroque, Constructivism, Cubism,
Expressionism, Fauvism, Graffiti, Hard-edge,
Impressionism, Mannerism, Modernism, Naïve art,
Neo-classicism, Op-Art, Orientalism, Pointillism,
Pop-Art, Postmodernism, Realism, Romanticism, Socialist
Realism and Surrealism.
